“Bad luck seems to follow Ewan Gilmore, a crewman on the steam liner Isle of Lewis. It’s a blot that makes him a pariah among the crew. Now, about to be left behind on the pier, he gets one last chance to prove himself – to masquerade as a passenger and serve as a secret bodyguard for a certain Professor Jakub Skovajsa and his gifted daughter, Tereza.

The Skovajsas are being deported under a cloud of suspicion and fear. Not even they know exactly what happened during he professor’s last experiment, but somehow it killed his wife, along with a squadron of soldiers, a general, two congressmen, and the secretary of War. Rumor has it the professor was working on a secret weapon that would end all wars, and still has a prototype hidden away.

As passions ride on board, the Isle of Lewis steams eastward into a maelstrom of stowaways, shysters, spies, death threats, traitorous allies, and a raging hurricane, with the mystery of the Bell Cannon at its eye.”

Informal Nonfiction Book Group @ Latham Library
The next meeting of Thetford’s informal nonfiction book discussion group will take place at Latham Library on Thetford Hill on Tuesday August 31st at 7 pm.
We will be discussing Poison Penmanship by Jessica Mitford.

After more than a year, it seems appropriate to celebrate meeting again in person with an entertaining read.   Jessica was one of the six daughters of the eccentric Lord Redesdale and a rebel.   She was also a brilliantly amusing writer like her sister Nancy Mitford.

The book may be obtained from your local library, via interlibrary loan,  possibly as an audio or e-book via ListenUp Vermont or in New Hampshire,  New Hampshire Downloadable Books. Users need only get a barcode number from their local library to use the services.  Or you can obtain the book from your favorite local bookseller, or via www.bookfinder.com, the aggregator site for booksellers both large and small from all over the world, and for books both new and secondhand.
Welcome back and we look forward to seeing you.
