Summer Reading Kickoff with Modern Times Theater @ Thetford Hill Green
Jun 19 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Summer Reading Kickoff with Modern Times Theater @ Thetford Hill Green

Latham Library is proud to present Modern Times Theater on June 19 at 4:00pm. Bring Dad or Grandpa to see “The Perils of Mr. Punch” episode #63, “Oceananigans Abound!”

This updated classic follows the troubles and travails of puppetry’s favorite loudmouth, Mr. Punch.  The skillfully operated hand puppets are made of garbage and up-cycled material, and are chock full of surprises and tricks, as is the elaborate stage. It’s a low-tech old-time spectacle, entertaining to children of all ages: from one to one hundred. By taking the best from the long tradition of Punch and Judy shows, and bringing the art form into the 21st century, this classic remains alive, vital, and hysterical to both children and adults today.

Sign-up for the 2022 Summer Reading Program will be available. All ages are welcome and the show is free! This event is part of the Thetford Libraries “Oceans of Possibilities” summer reading program.

UPDATE: due to high winds this show has been moved inside to the Latham Library Community Room, on the lower level of the building.

We will be discussing Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth, by Sarah Smarsh.
Sarah Smarsh was born a fifth generation Kansas wheat farmer on her paternal side, and the product of generations of teen mothers on her maternal side. Through her experiences growing up on a farm thirty miles west of Wichita, we are given a unique and essential look into the lives of poor and working class Americans living in the heartland.

During Sarah’s turbulent childhood in Kansas in the 1980s and 1990s, she enjoyed the freedom of a country childhood, but observed the painful challenges of the poverty around her; untreated medical conditions for lack of insurance or consistent care, unsafe job conditions, abusive relationships, and limited resources and information that would provide for the upward mobility that is the American Dream. By telling the story of her life and the lives of the people she loves with clarity and precision but without judgement, Smarsh challenges us to look more closely at the class divide in our country.

Beautifully written, in a distinctive voice, Heartland combines personal narrative with powerful analysis and cultural commentary, challengingthe myths about people thought to be less because they earn less.

The book may be obtained from your local library, via interlibrary loan,  possibly as an audio or e-book via ListenUp Vermont or in New Hampshire,  New Hampshire Downloadable Books. Users need only get a barcode number from their local library to use the services.  Or you can obtain the book from your favorite local bookseller, or via www.bookfinder.com, the aggregator site for booksellers both large and small from all over the world, and for books both new and secondhand.

All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you.   Please be vaccinated and masked if you plan to attend in person.

Where does a drop of water falling in your backyard come from? Where does it go? And who does it meet along the way? Join a VINS Environmental Educator in exploring the ways in which our green mountain landscape and the oceans of the world are intimately connected. We’ll trace the raindrop’s journey with a watershed model, and meet two live animal ambassadors who depend on this cycle, while learning ways we can help our land and oceans stay healthy.
