Littles at the Library is an event geared toward young children and their families to kick-off the “Week of the Young Child”, a fun-filled week celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities. The theme of the day is spring, gardens, and taking care of the Earth!
Please join us for a spring/gardening storytime with Rachael Cook from 2:30-3:30. Help us plant echinacea seeds for the new native pollinator garden at the Peabody Library, and bring home a potted seed to bring the bees and birds to your yard! There will also be a children’s book giveaway.

We will continue our discussion of The City in History by Lewis Mumford.
A definitive classic, Lewis Mumford’s massive historical study brings together a wide array of evidence — from the earliest group habitats to medieval towns to the modern centers of commerce — to show how the urban form has changed throughout human civilization.
Mumford explores the factors that made Greek cities uniques and offers a controversial view of the Roman city concept. He explains how the role of monasticism influenced Christian towns and how mercanitile capitalism shapes the modern city today.
The City in History remains a powerfully influential work, one that has shaped the agendas of urban planners, sociologists, and social critics since its publication in the 1960s.

Coming soon to Peabody: Tech and Textiles! Drop in for low-key technology chats and assistance, hang out and craft. Bring your device, your crochet/knitting/felting project, both or neither. It’s a flexible space for anyone looking for company while they create, or help setting up their new tablet, or just wanting someone to explain what exactly is cryptocurrency…I don’t know all the answers, but I love digging into these topics. We can chat while we knit, click around together, and set you up with further resources. And of course, you can also check out books.

Beginning May 4, (and May the Fourth be with you), Thursdays at Peabody from 1:00-5:00pm.

We will be discussing The Nordic Theory of Everything by Anu Partanen .
Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, successful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of everyday life – from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare – was much more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension. To understand why life is so different in the US and Finland, Partanen began to look closely at both.
In The Nordic Theory of Everything, Partanen compares and contrasts life in the United States with life in the Nordic region, focusing on four key relationships – parents and children, men and women, employees and employers, and government and citizens. She debunks criticism that Nordic countries are socialist “nanny states”, revealing instead that it is we Americans who are far more enmeshed in unhealthy dependencies than we realize. As Partanen explains step by step, the Nordic approach allows citizens to enjoy more individual freedom and independence than we do.

All Together Now: Summer Reading Kickoff with Modern Times Theater! @ Peabody Library

Peabody Library in Post Mills is proud to present Modern Times Theater on June 14 at 4:00pm.

This updated classic puppet show follows the troubles and travails of puppetry’s favorite loudmouth, Mr. Punch.  The skillfully operated hand puppets are made of garbage and up-cycled material, and are chock full of surprises and tricks, as is the elaborate stage. It’s a low-tech old-time spectacle, entertaining to children of all ages: from one to one hundred. By taking the best from the long tradition of Punch and Judy shows, and bringing the art form into the 21st century, this classic remains alive, vital, and hysterical to both children and adults today.

Sign-up for the 2023 Summer Reading Program will be available. All ages are welcome and the show is free! This event is part of the Thetford Libraries “All Together Now” summer reading program.
