Nonfiction Book Discussion Group @ Latham Library
The next meeting of Thetford’s informal nonfiction book discussion group will take place at Latham Library on Thetford Hill on Tuesday May 30th at 7 pm.    This meeting will be in person (no Zoom) and at the original time of 7 pm.   Weather permitting, we may even meet outside.
We will be discussing The Nordic Theory of Everything by Anu Partanen .
Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, successful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of everyday life – from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare – was much more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension. To understand why life is so different in the US and Finland, Partanen began to look closely at both.
In The Nordic Theory of Everything, Partanen compares and contrasts life in the United States with life in the Nordic region, focusing on four key relationships – parents and children, men and women, employees and employers, and government and citizens. She debunks criticism that Nordic countries are socialist “nanny states”, revealing instead that it is we Americans who are far more enmeshed in unhealthy dependencies than we realize. As Partanen explains step by step, the Nordic approach allows citizens to enjoy more individual freedom and independence than we do.

Tech and Textiles at Peabody! Drop in for low-key technology chats and assistance, hang out and craft. Bring your device, your crochet/knitting/felting project, both or neither. It’s a flexible space for anyone looking for company while they create, or help setting up their new tablet, or just wanting someone to explain what exactly is cryptocurrency…I don’t know all the answers, but I love digging into these topics. We can chat while we knit, click around together, and set you up with further resources. And of course, you can also check out books.

Thursdays at Peabody from 1:00-5:00pm.

All Together Now: Summer Reading Kickoff with Modern Times Theater! @ Peabody Library

Peabody Library in Post Mills is proud to present Modern Times Theater on June 14 at 4:00pm.

This updated classic puppet show follows the troubles and travails of puppetry’s favorite loudmouth, Mr. Punch.  The skillfully operated hand puppets are made of garbage and up-cycled material, and are chock full of surprises and tricks, as is the elaborate stage. It’s a low-tech old-time spectacle, entertaining to children of all ages: from one to one hundred. By taking the best from the long tradition of Punch and Judy shows, and bringing the art form into the 21st century, this classic remains alive, vital, and hysterical to both children and adults today.

Sign-up for the 2023 Summer Reading Program will be available. All ages are welcome and the show is free! This event is part of the Thetford Libraries “All Together Now” summer reading program.
