Storytelling Workshop with Simon Brooks @ Peabody Library
Aug 12 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Storytelling Workshop with Simon Brooks @ Peabody Library

Together with award winning storyteller Simon Brooks, a limited number of young people (11 years and up) will be able to work on presenting a story.  Simon is known across the country for the folk and fairy tales he tells. This is great experience and the tools and skills Simon will impart can be applied to public speaking. The workshop is limited to eight participants and will be held outside with social distancing practices. To sign up send an email to librarians@thetfordlibrary.org.
See below for more details.

BEFORE attending the workshop, please find a short folk or fairy tale, and read it through at least a couple of times so you have a basic knowledge of the story. Bring paper and pen and open mind!
In the first thirty minutes students will learn to set up their story. Second thirty minutes they will learn how to add details and nuance. Final hour will be group coaching and polishing of story. Participants not required to perform, but more is gained from this experience. Everyone will get the chance to try their story on others.

Simon‘s work is known throughout the States having performed at festivals and conferences in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Florida, Tennessee, Arizona, and Utah. His work has taken him to California, New York, Connecticut, and Maine working at schools, collages, community clubs, senior residencies, libraries, many camps, and for legal groups, hospitals, and museums.

He has two podcasts – Conversations with Storytellers (https://smbrooks.podbean.com/) and Lindline and folk and fairy tales (https://smilinsimon.podbean.com/). He is working on his sixth storytelling CD. His work can be found on his website (https://www.diamondscree.com/) and at Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/simonbrooks).

“New Yorker” article discussion group @ Online via Zoom

"New Yorker" article discussion group @ Online via Zoom

Fans of the New Yorker Magazine! Latham Library has something new for you!

A generous donor recently gifted Latham Library digital access to the New Yorker. The library will use this gift to host an article discussion group. The format will be similar to a book discussion group. Wide ranging topics from current events to more entertaining pursuits will be chosen once a month for the hour long discussion. The library host will faciltate the hour. If possible, a guest who has experience or expertise on the selected subject will join the group to help deepen the conversation. This group will meet on the last Wednesday evening of the month on Zoom.

Participants will need to register in advance on a first come, first serve basis. He or she will receive a confirmation email that includes a Zoom link to the meeting, a link to the selected New Yorker magazine article that may or may not also contain an audio version of the article, and a PDF of the article that one can download and print at home. If you do not have access to a printer, you can call Peter Blodgett at 785-4361 for a copy.

At this time, we can only register 8 participants on the library’s New Yorker subscription. However, if you are already a New Yorker magazine subscriber, you are welcome to join in what hopefully will be an interesting hour.

These Discussions will take place on the last Wednesdays of the month from 5:00-6:00pm.

If interested, please email Latham Memorial at NYarticles.Latham@gmail.com. See you then!
