About the Thetford Public Libraries and the Thetford Community

Thetford is a town in Orange County, Vermont, located in the Upper Connecticut River Valley.  The town is composed of small villages that include East Thetford, North Thetford, Thetford Hill, Thetford Center, Rices Mills, Union Village, and Post Mills.  Thetford has a population of 2775 as of the 2020 census.  There are two libraries that serve the public in Thetford.  Latham Memorial Library is located in Thetford Hill in close proximity to three schools, which are Thetford Elementary, Thetford Academy, and Open Fields.  George Peabody Library, the oldest building used as a library in Vermont, is located in Post Mills. Since the 1800’s, libraries in Thetford have played a central role in the life of the community.

By employing 68 hours of professional librarian expertise, these incorporated public libraries provide print and digital collections, programs, information technology services, and community outreach to the Thetford community and beyond.  While the Library Director reports directly to the Latham Library Board of Trustees, a 501-c-3 corporation, approximately 25% of time is allotted for programs and services for the Peabody Library, in close consultation with the Peabody Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director is responsible for the maintenance and development of the Latham Library’s spaces within the Bicentennial Building, while the Peabody Board is responsible for the Peabody Library spaces and building.  The Thetford Library Federation owns and maintains the Bicentennial Building.
