DESCRIPTION:<p>Tuesday February 25th at 12:00 (noon)\, at Latham Library an
 d online via Zoom.</p>\n<p><strong>Please contact librarian@thetfordlibrar
y.org for the Zoom link and to RSVP if you plan to attend in person (in ca
 se of bad weather\, etc).</strong></p>\n<p>This month’s title: <em>West Wi
 th The Night</em>\, by Beryl Markham</p>\n<p>From group leader E D M Landm
 an MD:</p>\n<p>The classic memoir of Africa\, aviation\, and adventure—the
inspiration for Paula McLain’s Circling the Sun and “a bloody wonderful b
ook” (Ernest Hemingway).</p>\n<p>Beryl Markham’s life story is a true epic
. Not only did she set records and break barriers as a pilot\, she shatter
ed societal expectations\, threw herself into torrid love affairs\, surviv
ed desperate crash landings—and chronicled everything. A contemporary of
Isak Dinesen\, the author of Out of Africa\, Markham left an enduring memo
ir that soars with astounding candor and shimmering insights.</p>\n<p>A re
bel from a young age\, the British-born Markham was raised in Kenya’s unfo
rgiving farmlands. She trained as a bush pilot at a time when most African
s had never seen a plane. In 1936\, she accepted the ultimate challenge: t
o fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west\, a feat that fello
w female aviator Amelia Earhart had completed in reverse just a few years
before. Markham’s successes and her failures—and her deep\, lifelong love
of the “soul of Africa”—are all told here with wrenching honesty and agile
wit.</p>\n<p>The book may be obtained from your local library\, via inter
