A Hard Look at America discussion Series @ Latham and Peabody Libraries

From 6/27/2023 to 9/26/2023, Latham Memorial Library will host the book discussion series A Hard Look at America. Established by a newspaper publisher and coinciding with the founding of a journalism school at Columbia University, the Pulitzer Prizes have continually recognized excellence in journalism. The books in this series, comprised of Pulitzer-winning reporting and research, dig deep, revealing facts and stories that continue to be relevant years after they were brought to the surface.

All discussions will take place at 7:00 pm in the Reading Room on the main floor of the library, except for the first discussion which will be held at the Peabody Library in Post Mills.

  • June 27 AT PEABODY LIBRARY: Sheri Fink, Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital  *At Peabody Library*
  • July 25: Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, All the President’s Men
  • August 29: Edward J. Larson, Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America’s Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion
  • September 26: Norman Mailer, The Armies of the Night

These sessions are free, open to the public, and accessible to those with disabilities. Books will be available on loan in advance. For more information, contact Emily Zollo at (802) 785-4361 or librarian@thetfordlibrary.org

Tech and Textiles @ Peabody Library
Sep 28 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Tech and Textiles at Peabody! Drop in for low-key technology chats and assistance, hang out and craft. Bring your device, your crochet/knitting/felting project, both or neither. It’s a flexible space for anyone looking for company while they create, or help setting up their new tablet, or just wanting someone to explain what exactly is cryptocurrency…I don’t know all the answers, but I love digging into these topics. We can chat while we knit, click around together, and set you up with further resources. And of course, you can also check out books.

Thursdays at Peabody from 1:00-5:00 pm.

The Visiting Nurse and Hospice for VT and NH will share a presentation about advanced care planning at Latham Library, describing the services they have available as well as new information surrounding dementia. The library and the Thetford Elder Network (TEN) encourage adults of all ages to attend. It’s important for pre-seniors to understand and think about advanced directives, too.

Guests will be able to browse portraits – made by esteemed artists from this region – and informational panels on climate-friendly agriculture and use their phones to play audio interviews with the farmers depicted in the portraits.
