Friday the 13th Spooky Stories for Halloween with Simon Brooks! @ Peabody Library

Beware! It’s Friday the 13th, and Halloween is right around the corner. Get in the mood for the holiday with frightful stories told by master storyteller Simon Brooks. Not for the young at heart! Put the young children to bed, leave the sitter in charge and as the wind blows against the panes and shutters rattle, head over to Peabody Library, Post Mills, Vermont – the oldest library building in the state. Peabody Library has a ghost story of its own! Storyteller Simon Brooks will be telling tales for the community, beginning with not so frightening tales and making them more scary throughout the evening – in case you reach your limit – wa ha haa.
This family event is not for very young children or those who don’t like scary stories!

Informal Nonfiction Book Discussion Group @ Latham Library
Oct 24 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

The next meeting of Thetford’s informal nonfiction book discussion group will take place at Latham Library on Thetford Hill on Tuesday October 24th at 7 pm.

We will be discussing The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis.

What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.
Lewis’s insightful work is as much a testament to the unsung heroes who routinely go unnoticed in the unglamorous business of government as it is a criticism of the current administration’s negligence. He finds tireless public servants whose conviction and deep awareness keep schools in session and food programs afloat. Far from anti-government, The Fifth Risk is a powerful ode to those rare people who hold firm in their convictions and, despite all odds and opposition, remember why they got into government in the first place: to benefit society and better mankind.

The book may be obtained from your local library, via interlibrary loan, possibly as an audio or e-book via ListenUp Vermont or in New Hampshire, New Hampshire Downloadable Books.
