Fall ‘26/Winter ’27 Gastronomy Book Discussion Group
For our fourth season, we tackle non-fiction and fiction selections that illustrate how food
can trigger purpose, acceptance, community, control, conflict, memories, emotions and
bizarre circumstances, while also defining individuals and cultures. We consider cuisine
from Detroit, Japan, Philadelphia, India, France and wherever Stanley Tucci eats during
a year of meals.
Discussions take place Thursdays, from 12 noon to 1 p.m., in the Latham Library
Community Room, and begin with a voluntary potluck lunch featuring dishes inspired by
the book selection.
Our first discussion, Thursday, October 22, will cover Everything I Learned, I Learned
in a Chinese Restaurant, a memoir by Curtis Chin, who shares how he eventually
embraced his American-born Chinese identity at Chung’s Cantonese Cuisine, a 1980’s
Detroit restaurant. Bringing a book-related dish to share is optional.
