Accidental Atget: In the Spirit of Atget
While looking at the book of Atget’s photograph’s I thought it would
be interesting to look at pictures that I took in France in September
2013 to see if I had taken any by accident that were in the spirit of
his. Maybe everyone takes the same pictures in Paris. But it’s fun to
see the timelessness.
In 1897 at age 40 Atget, a painter, turned into a photographer. His
favorite subject was Paris.
He died in in 1927 soon after Bernice Abbot took his portrait. In
this book she put together (and that was published in 1964) she says
“his subject were not sensational, but nevertheless shocking in their
very familiarity. The real world seen in wonderment and surprise , was
mirrored in each print.” (p.viii)
