Films about Immigration with Rick Winston
Film expert Rick Winston will present “Films About Immigration” in conjunction with the 2022 Book / Film Discussion Group.
Whether it’s Syrians in New York (“The Visitor”) and Finland (“The Other Side of Hope”), Indians in Mississippi (“Mississippi Masala”), Palestinians in Illinois (“Amreeka”) , Moroccans in Montreal (“M. Lazhar”), West Africans in London (“Dirty Pretty Things”) and Belgium (“La Promesse”), filmmakers have been at the forefront of tackling issues of displacement, discrimination, exploitation and assimilation, showing us the human struggles at the heart of one of the most pressing issues of our times.
Rick Winston was the co-owner of Montpelier’s Savoy Theater for 29 years, and was Programming Director for the Green Mountain Film Festival for 14 years. He has taught film history at Burlington College, Community College of Vermont, Goddard College, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and has made presentations throughout Vermont on film history.
