George Peabody Library in Post Mills is the oldest library in the Federation. Built in 1867, it was the gift of the banker-philanthropist better known for his museums at Harvard, Yale, and Baltimore. As Thetford’s first library and Vermont’s earliest built specifically as a library, it boasted a grand collection of 6,000 volumes and was the largest collection on the eastern side of the state.  Today the Peabody Library is known for its small but wonderful collection of books and other library materials and its programming and presentations for all ages.
