Latham Library Adult Book/Film Discussion Group
Welcome to Latham Library’s Adult Book/Film Discussion Group. Every month, we’ll couple a book with a film featuring a similar topic or theme. You can choose to read the book and/or view the film.
Our book for March is “Rez Life.” Written by David Treuer, a member of the Ojibwe tribe from Minnesota’s Leech Lake Reservation, the book offers an insider’s view of the history of reservations and contemporary Native American life as it debunks common misconceptions and explores political tensions, casinos, crime, cultural preservation and other topics.
Our companion film is “Winter in the Blood”, a time-bending odyssey that depicts a Native American wrestling with regret, childhood wounds and the challenges of ethnicity in a small-town community in Montana. Based on the book by James Welch, it was an official selection at the 2013 Los Angeles, Austin and American Indian film festivals. To view the film, visit the library’s website www.thetfordlibrary.org and look for Kanopy Streaming Movies at the bottom of the left column on the homepage.
